In the third-person view, Stranger runs much faster than he does in first-person view. The ability to switch between either first or third-person views at any time also presents players with a different set of strategic advantages and disadvantages for each view that they will learn to deal with throughout various combat situations.

One such genre the game explores is that of both first-person and third-person shooters mainly through the creative use of a newly designed live ammo system employed by Stranger. With Stranger’s Wrath, the developers wanted to take advantage of the main character’s physical power by giving the game a lot more action oriented sequences and events but they also wanted to achieve a complicated mixture of genres that would allow for a truly unique gameplay ex-perience. Throughout the game, players will learn more about the background of Stranger, which will shed some light on the reasons for his personal shortcomings that he makes up for with his might. Stranger is a much different character who possesses a great amount of physical strength but he struggles with a lot of his own inner weaknesses. In the past, we’ve seen both Abe and Munch, who are much weaker as far as physical strength goes but they possess very strong wills that have always helped them overcome the obstacles before them. To do this, Oddworld Inhabitants created a new hero in the form of Stranger whose personality and physical traits are much different from the characters we’ve seen before.

In the previous three Oddworld titles the gameplay was mainly of the action/adventure platform-ing type, but this time around the Inhabitants wanted to take the game in a new, more expansive direction that would allow players to explore new territories of gameplay within Stranger’s Wrath. Stranger’s personality also suggests that he just might have tossed in the towel on his given career, as his enthusiasm for collecting bounties seems to be solely driven by his desire to cure his illness. What is also clear is that Stranger must save up a bundle of moolah in order to pay for whatever operation could possibly save him from his ailment. While it isn’t made known exactly what seems to be troubling his health, the general idea that he is suffering something that requires a spe-cial operation is made clear. Not much else is told as far as the story goes at this time, but after a couple more bad guys are captured or killed, players will learn about a mysterious ailment that seems to be plaguing Stranger. Players pick up control of Stranger, and they will need to make their way to town where they can collect the reward for the achieved bounty. The game opens up with a very stylish and entertaining video sequence that shows Stranger successfully bagging a bad guy. What is known from the start of the game is that Stranger is a highly skilled bounty hunter, who seeks out potential bounties in any of the various towns he comes across in his travels. Rather than setting up an underlying story early on in the game, with players working towards some type of goal, you are only given subtle hints as to what really drives Stranger’s need to save up money. Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath is a bit of a side-step from the usual Oddworld release, but one that has reinvigor-ated the franchise and proven once again that Lorne Lanning is never short of creativity. The long wait and switch in publishers has paid off, as the Inhabitants have put together yet another amazing game that has succeeded in its endeavor and expanded the Oddworld universe beyond anything we’ve seen before.

Originally slated as a Microsoft published exclusive, Stranger’s Wrath was optioned to Electronic Arts, who has kept the game as an exclusive to the Xbox. Being his own worst critic, Lorne and the team of Oddworld Inhabitants went back into the studio and began working on their next title which has fully developed into Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath.

While Munch’s Oddysee was an impressive looking game that continued in the tradition of great gameplay and storytelling we’ve come to expect from the games creator, Lorne Lanning, the game fell somewhat short of the full potential of what even Lorne himself had in mind. Being one of the launch games for the Xbox there was a lot of hooplah surrounding Oddworld In-habitant’s first release.
